The real questions — and how to answer them
These are the questions officers actually ask. The goal is never to memorize a script — it's to answer honestly, clearly and confidently in English. Here's the approach for each:
“Why do you want to study in the United States?”
✓ Approach: Be specific about the program and what the US offers for it, and connect it to a clear career plan back home. Genuine, concrete reasons sound strong.
✗ Avoid: Vague answers like 'it's the best country' or anything that hints you want to stay permanently.
“Why this university specifically?”
✓ Approach: Name real reasons — the program, faculty, ranking in your field, the offer/scholarship. Show you researched and chose it on purpose.
✗ Avoid: Sounding like you'd go anywhere that accepted you, or not knowing basics about the school.
“How will you fund your studies?”
✓ Approach: State your funding clearly and confidently — sponsor, savings, scholarship — with the numbers straight. Certainty here is critical.
✗ Avoid: Hesitation, unclear figures, or a funding story that doesn't add up.
“What are your plans after graduation?”
✓ Approach: Show clear intent to return home and use the degree there — a concrete role, family business, or career step in your country.
✗ Avoid: Any hint of intent to immigrate or 'I'll see what opportunities come up in the US.'
“Do you have relatives in the United States?”
✓ Approach: Answer honestly and briefly. Having relatives isn't disqualifying — just state the facts calmly without over-explaining.
✗ Avoid: Nervousness or hiding information; honesty stated confidently is always better.
“Why not study this in your home country?”
✓ Approach: Point to specific advantages of the US program for your field and career — not a criticism of home, but a clear 'this is better for this goal.'
✗ Avoid: Putting down your own country, or reasons that sound like you just want to leave.
